Abstract

Adjustment challenges and the potential for economic development linked to ecological transformation differ significantly across regions. Many lagging rural areas are important locations of renewable energy production and might thus benefit more than others from energy transition. Investment subsidies provided by regional policy, regulation to increase local value added from renewable energy production, and regional energy pricing might help lagging regions to reap the potential benefits of the transformation process.
