Abstract

Over the past 20 years, foreign trade has significantly contributed to Austria's economic growth. Foreign trade promotes efficiency gains, structural change, and technological innovations, while imports enhance competition and increase product variety. Austria achieves substantial real income gains through trade liberalization, which exceed the average of comparable EU countries. European integration, particularly through value chains linkages, plays a crucial role in these successes. In the face of global challenges and rising protectionism, strengthening the EU single market and better utilizing EU's free trade agreements with new potential markets remain central to Austria's economic future.
