In the study there are submitted to critical analysis some widely used in assessing the quality of academic work at higher education institutions surveys, indicators, average values, etc. Attention is paid to issues connected with measurement and scaling. Demonstrated is the logical untenability of the used arithmetic mean and is proposed an alternative methodology for designing a generalized indicator for measuring the quality of academic work by means of surveys.
