Interpersonal Attitudes of Teachers and Advantaged and Disadvantaged Pupils

Abstract

Analyses of teachers' attitudes toward children and pupils' attitudes toward their teacher as dependent variables by analysis of variance produced results indicating great variance between the characteristics of teachers of advantaged pupils and teachers of disadvantaged pupils. The following factors were found to be significant sources of variation: (1) pupils' social class; (2) teacher's sex; (3) grade level; (4) teacher's years of experience; (5) pupils' ethnic-social class characteristics. Also, significant interaction was found operating between (1) and (2) and between (1) and (3). In improving educational opportunities, it is essential to consider administrative-community factors and personality-pedagogical characteristics of teachers. In investigation of relevant contributors to variance in classroom operations, pupils' achievement, and teachers' effectiveness, teacher-pupil interaction cannot be overlooked.
