Abstract

The Albarregas Park not only represents an important green lung for the city of Mérida (Venezuela), but also constitutes a potential public recreational center. However, pollution conditions of the Albarregas River, From which the park takes its name, prevent citizens from enjoying the park´s amenities as they were created. As part of an ambitious program that intends to recover the park as well as the natural sources of water in this town, this study applies contingent evaluation in order to determine the factors that affect the individual´s decision to pay for cleaning the river and rescuing the park. Results suggest peoples are very receptive and willing to this kind of projects.
