The foreing exchange market in Venezuela

Abstract

El sistema cambiario refleja de alguna manera la estructura económica del país, de allí que la evolución histórica que se hace del mercado cambiario marcha junto a la evolución de la estructura económica venezolana. En este artículo se hace una reseña histórica, dividida en dos períodos, sobre el mercado cambiario en Venezuela. En el primer período (1830- 1983), se describen varias etapas evolutivas del sistema bancario venezolano y aspectos tales como la puesta en práctica de una política de cambios diferenciales, la crisis cambiaria de 1959 al 62 y los efectos de la nacionalización del petróleo y el hierro en la política cambiaria. En el segundo período (1983-1989), se analizan los antecedentes que dieron lugar a los acontecimientos de 1983, luego se hace una descripción de las más importantes políticas cambiarias plasmadas en los diferentes convenios cambiarios y, por último, se hace un análisis sobre la instrumentación por parte del segundo gobierno de Carlos Andrés Pérez de un tipo de cambio único, libre y fluctuante.
