Abstract

The culture of debt has been considered synonymous with low-income households (B40). The purpose of their debt is to buy goods that meet their needs. An overview of literary studies on low-income groups in suburban settlements found debt culture has haunted their lives. Group B40 is expected to loan for their basic needs and to fund their daily basic costs. However, due to time and environment circulation, there may be other needs that they want to fulfill. Therefore, this research is to study the effect of social relationships with the intention of increasing the loan and the purchase of non-basic goods (tahsiniyyat goods) through loans carried out among B40 households in Felda Sabah, Malaysia. The sample of this study consists of 378 representatives of B40 households. The findings show that there is a significant relationship between social relations with the intention of increasing the lending and buying of non-basic items through loans. This study can explain that social relationships have a significant influence on the financial management and spending of a person. Hence, the efforts to educate on financial management, especially debts need to be extended to the B40 group as well as the need for their involvement in spiritual programs so that they have the strength in dealing with social groups that always influence people in many respects.
