Fecundidad y desarrollo económico y social en Chile, 1952 - 1970

Abstract

El concepto transición demográfica se utiliza para referirse al comportamiento histórico de las tasas generales de mortalidad y de natalidad de la población de un país. Se espera que todos los países experimenten con mayor o menor rapidez una evolución similar. Esta se caracteriza por una primera fase en que ambas tasas son elevadas y el crecimiento de la población -suponiendo ausencia de migración internacional- es moderado. Luego, una segunda fase en que la tasa de mortalidad comienza a descender y la tasa de natalidad lo hace con cierto rezago. Durante esta segunda fase, y dependiendo del rezago con que la fecundidad comienza a descender, las tasas de crecimiento de la población pueden permanecer por largo tiempo elevadas. Finalmente, una tercera fase en que ambas tasas llegan a niveles bajos y la tasa de crecimiento puede, según la diferencia entre las tasas de mortalidad y natalidad, alcanzar diversos niveles.
