Nacionalismo económico y reforma tributaria a fines del siglo XIX en Chile

Abstract

Tradicionalmente se ha sostenido que el Libre Comercio y su principal exponente, Jean Courcelle Seneuil, afectaron de manera adversa el desarrollo económico de Chile. Se afirma que Chile tuvo la posibilidad de convertirse en una nación industrial, no obstante, con el advenimiento del Libre Comercio se eliminaron las barreras gracias a las cuales las nacientes industrias habían prosperado. Las fábricas chilenas incapaces de competir, se debilitaron transformando a la nación en un productor de materias primas: una colonia económica para las potencias industriales de Europa y los Estados Unidos. De esta manera, el libre comercio ha sido culpado de ser el causante del subdesarrollo chileno. Este documento demostrará que la influencia del liberalismo económico ha sido exagerada. Es verdad que el libre comercio fue creciendo a comienzos de 1860, pero su influencia se vio gradualmente frenada posteriormente.
