Fluctuaciones en los indicadores de salud y en la economía chilena

Abstract

Cómo se relacionan las fluctuaciones económicas globales con el estado de salud de la población, y qué tan estrecha es esta relación, son dos preguntas a las que se dirige este estudio. Se analizan las relaciones existentes entre los cambios de corto plazo en la economía (producto, empleo y salarios) y algunos indicadores de salud (mortalidad, morbilidad y desnutrición) en Chile en el período 1960-1986. Se encuentra, en general, una asociación negativa entre las fluctuaciones económicas y los indicadores de salud. A pesar de que algunos indicadores como la mortalidad y la desnutrición infantiles han tenido cambios de corto plazo muy moderados, éstos han estado ligados a las fluctuaciones en la economía. Los resultados muestran que la morbilidad ha sido más sensible que la desnutrición infantil, y ésta a su vez más sensible que la mortalidad, a cambios económicos. En general, la ocupación es la variable económica que aparece más estrechamente asociada a las fluctuaciones en los indicadores de salud.
