La paridad del poder adquisitivo en América Latina

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia la estabilidad de la paridad del poder de compra (PPC) en términos del equilibrio de largo plazo para Argentina, Brasil, Chile, México, Perú y Uruguay. Utilizando datos trimestrales desde 1949.1 hasta 1985.2, el test de “cointegración” entre tipos de cambio y precios relativos sugiere que la PPC es un equilibrio estable para cuatro de los países. Un modelo de corrección simultánea de errores de tipos de cambios e inflación determina el comportamiento dinámico en desequilibrio. Los modelos estimados predicen una mayor desviación de la PPC, cuando las perturbaciones no explicadas provienen de la ecuación de tipo de cambio que cuando provienen de la ecuación de tasa de inflación doméstica. El set de datos también muestra grandes desviaciones de la PPC en algunos períodos.
