La deuda pública externa de Chile entre 1818 y 1935

Abstract

El documento hace un análisis de la evolución que tuvo la deuda pública externa desde la independencia de Chile hasta la Gran Crisis de los años treinta. Para tal efecto se tuvo que construir una serie sobre la base de contabilidad fiscal, lo cual requirió determinar los saldos anuales de cada uno de los empréstitos contraidos en el exterior. Se utilizan algunos indicadores para observar la cuantía del endeudamiento y se examinan los factores conducentes a la obtención de los préstamos, así como el destino de los recursos. En la última sección se estudia la interrupción del servicio de la deuda externa ocurrido en 1931 como consecuencia de la Gran Crisis y la posterior reanudación parcial de los pagos.
