Abstract
Heritage Tourism (HT), as aconcept, has emerged as a pivotalcomponent in the global tourismindustry, reflecting an increasinginterest in the preservation andpromotion of cultural, historical, andnatural heritage. Its developmentstems from a confluence of factorsincluding globalization, the riseof the experience economy, anda growing recognition of theintrinsic value of preserving culturalidentity and historical legacies.HT has its roots in the late 19thand early 20th centuries whenaffluent travelers, predominantlyfrom Europe, embarked on «grandtours» to explore cultural landmarksand historical sites. However, itwasn’t until the latter half of the20th century that HT began to gainmomentum as a distinct tourismniche. The UNESCO World HeritageConvention of 1972 played a crucialrole by establishing a frameworkfor the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural andnatural heritage sites of outstandinguniversal value. This internationalrecognition sparked increasedinterest in heritage conservationand stimulated tourism to thesesites. Furthermore, advancementsin transportation, communication, and technology have facilitatedeasier access to remote destinations, thereby expanding the scope of HT.The proliferation of digital platformsand social media has also amplifiedawareness and engagement withheritage sites, enabling virtualexploration and fostering a sense ofconnection among global audiences.
