Competency-based strategies of women entrepreneurs for overcoming barriers: The key role of entrepreneurial learning

This study explores the competencies and strategies women entrepreneurs use to overcome barriers in entrepreneurship. Although entrepreneurial competencies have been widely examined, limited research addresses how entrepreneurial learning and related competencies specifically support women in navigating challenges. To bridge this gap, the study identifies key competencies and strategies grounded in entrepreneurial learning. Using behavioral event interviews with 36 American entrepreneurs, both female and male, the research gathered rich, qualitative data on competencies and strategies utilized to navigate entrepreneurial challenges. Findings reveal that women employ distinct competency-driven strategies that emphasize entrepreneurial learning, critical reflection, and leveraging social insights. The study presents an integrative approach to examine and connect key dimensions of learning, such as experiential and social learning, and the competency-based strategies adopted by women entrepreneurs. Beyond contributing to entrepreneurship theory, education, and policy, the study offers actionable insights that serve as both inspiration and practical guidance for women navigating entrepreneurial pathways.
