Women entrepreneurship: A synthesis of systematic literature reviews

Abstract

Systematic literature reviews (SLRs) on women entrepreneurship (WE) have gained attention globally, but there is a dearth of literature focusing on the synthesis of published SLRs. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing 40 SLRs published between 2014 and 2024, retrieved from the Web of Science database. Using a qualitative thematic analysis approach, we examined research trends, key themes, and methodological gaps in WE literature. The study reveals the major themes of SLRs, including: factors influencing WE performance, barriers and challenges of WE, themes/trends of WE literature, and future directions. Additionally, the study identifies underexplored areas, such as the role of digital transformation, psychological well-being, and cross-cultural comparisons in WE. By synthesizing existing SLRs, this study provides a structured foundation for future research and policy development in WE.
