The role of family support and inspirational role models through social cognitive career theory

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of family support and role models on social entrepreneurial intention, with a specific focus on the mediating roles of self-efficacy and outcome expectations within the framework of social cognitive career theory. Drawing on survey data from 458 final-year university students in Vietnam, the findings reveal that family support significantly enhances self-efficacy, whereas role models exert a positive influence on both self-efficacy and outcome expectations, thereby strengthening individuals’ intention to pursue social ventures. The results underscore the critical role of family engagement, mentorship programs, and supportive policies in building entrepreneurial confidence and clarifying the perceived rewards of social entrepreneurship. Practical strategies—such as integrating role models into educational initiatives and promoting financial and emotional support through family networks—can contribute to cultivating a favorable environment for future social entrepreneurs.
