Sustainable Development Goal knowledge and higher education students’ entrepreneurial goal orientation: A serial mediation model through sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial self-efficacy and desirability

Abstract

The influence of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) knowledge on sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial goals remains underexplored, particularly within sustainability-oriented entrepreneurship. This study addresses this gap using the stimulus–organism–response framework to investigate how SDG knowledge (stimulus) affects entrepreneurial sustainable goal orientation (response) through sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial self-efficacy and the perceived desirability of sustainability-oriented entrepreneurship (organisms). A structural equation modeling analysis of data from 385 undergraduate students revealed that SDG knowledge positively influences entrepreneurial sustainable goal orientation, both directly and indirectly. Self-efficacy and desirability significantly mediate this relationship, with a serial mediation effect highlighting the interconnected pathways driving sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial goals. The findings extend the stimulus–organism–response framework to the sustainability domain, offering theoretical insights and practical guidance for fostering sustainability-driven entrepreneurial initiatives.
