The tale of two networks: leveraging digital twin inspired simulations to enhance on-demand transit services

Abstract

This study explores how simulations, inspired by digital twin (DT) concepts, can refine service parameters within on-demand transport (ODT) systems. Focusing on Auckland’s AT Local and Porto Alegre’s TeuBus, we collaborated with transit providers to develop customized service parameters aligned with their strategic goals. The research evaluated the anticipated effects of service adjustments through simulations. The outcomes were subsequently validated using Bayesian Structural Time-series Modeling (BSTS). Our analysis reveals significant improvements in daily booking success rates during weekdays: AT Local saw an average increase of 30 bookings, while TeuBus experienced an increase of 172 bookings. This study adds depth to ongoing research in ODT planning by highlighting the potential of DT technologies to enhance service efficiency. We also outline future directions for applying DT technologies to assist on-demand transit systems.
