Engineering geological settings of the Rječina River Valley (Croatia): a LiDAR-based approach

Abstract

This paper presents the engineering geological settings of the Rječina River Valley (23 km2) in north-western coastal region of Croatia, through the creation of the first comprehensive engineering geological map at a 1:10,000 scale. The study area is populated and geologically complex environment, prone to various geological hazards. The Main Map was created by visually interpreting high-resolution LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) Digital Terrain Model (DTM), complemented by a review of pre-existing engineering geological data and field reconnaissance. The main results include the identification of 15 engineering formations, and 269 gullies, presented on the Main Map in relation to elements of the anthropogenic environment. The study highlights the effectiveness of LiDAR-based engineering geological mapping and geomorphological characterization in areas lacking detailed geological maps. This new large-scale engineering geological map enhances sustainable local management and supports various engineering activities and subsequent investigations, particularly those related to fluvial processes and mass movements.
