Historical damaging geo-hydrological events affecting the Catanzaro municipality (Calabria, Southern Italy), 1830–2023

Abstract

Geo-hydrological phenomena are natural hazards that cause severe damage, especially in urban and peri-urban areas. This study aims to assess the interaction between such phenomena and elements at risk through the development of a geodatabase and thematic maps. Using historical data combined with GIS tools, we created a geodatabase and a set of thematic maps related to damaging geo-hydrological events in Catanzaro municipality, Calabria region (Southern Italy). The geodatabase includes a large amount of data spanning the period from 1830 to 2023, allowing for the identification of areas more prone to geo-hydrological phenomena based on the frequency of past events. It contains 859 damage records, each with its date of occurrence, affected sites, type of phenomenon, and damaged elements. Main Map includes four thematic maps, related to landslide, flood, urban flooding, and storm surge phenomena. These findings provide essential geospatial insights for the effective zonation and management of geo-hydrological risk.
