A polarization-independent multiband metamaterial absorber

Abstract

A novel multiband meta absorber in the S and C bands of electromagnetic spectrum is presented in this paper. The unit cell is designed to be symmetric in all axes so that maximum independence is achieved on polarization sensitivity of the structure. The proposed structure will be put into use in the form of a periodic arrangement of the unit cell, which is based on a metal-backed standard, low-cost FR-4 epoxy substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm. The structure is simulated using Ansoft's HFSS software and is found to be resonating at 2.08, 5.24, and 7.7 GHz frequencies with absorptivity of 96.73, 95.28, and 97.67% respectively. Polarization dependence is studied by virtue of variation of angle ϕ from $ 0^{\circ} $ 0∘ to $ 60^{\circ} $ 60∘ and oblique incidence by variation of angle θ from $ 0^{\circ} $ 0∘ to $ 60^{\circ} $ 60∘. Structure is found to be polarization independent, while oblique incidence in TE mode is a bit poor in comparison to TM mode.
