Abstract

Efficiency enhancement in a magnetron by modification of the shape of the anode vane is demonstrated using 3 D PIC code CST particle studio. In the proposed modification, the axial edges of the anode vane tips facing the cathode are chamfered. The optimized chamfer radius and angle are 0.75 mm and 20 degrees, respectively. The radiated output power and resonant frequency measured at the output port of the simulation model having unchamfered vanes are 1.6 kW and 2.358 GHz, respectively. After the proposed modification of the shapes of anode vanes, the power is increased by ∼44%, efficiency is increased to 80%, and the oscillation spectrum is purer. The applied anode voltage and magnetic field are 4 kV and 0.1700 Tesla, respectively in both cases. The collected current at anode vanes is 720 mA.
