A comprehensive methodology for Taconic-based ultra-wideband band pass filters

Abstract

This work presents a methodology for designing Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Band Pass Filters (BPFs) using Taconic (TLX-9) substrates with tapered coupled lines, open-loop resonators, and coupled defective structure resonators to enhance EM field coupling. The first UWB BPF, designed via EM simulation and fabricated, operates from 3.35 GHz to 10.67 GHz with a 107% Fractional Band Width (FBW), 0.8 Selectivity Factor (SF), over 16 dB port 1 loss, and a maximum insertion loss of 0.83 dB. It achieves 16 dB and 14 dB out-of-band rejections before and after the passband, respectively. The measured results, using a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA), closely match simulations, with minor deviations due to connector and fabrication tolerances. To validate the method, a second BPF targeting the X and Ku bands (8 GHz-16 GHz) was modeled, confirming the approach's suitability for UWB applications in modern communication systems across two critical frequency windows.
