Generalized broad-band Effective Medium Theory of two-component metamaterials including magnetic ones: a review

Abstract

This review is dedicated to the Effective Medium Theory of two-component metamaterials in the broad frequency range from microwaves to visible region. The metamaterials are unbounded periodic 2-D lattice of infinitely long cylinders of circular cross section or unbounded periodic 3-D lattice of spherical particles embedded in a homogeneous isotropic host dielectric. Three types of inclusions are considered: 1) non-magnetic metal inclusions; 2) ferric inclusions; 3) ferromagnetic inclusions. It is assumed that ferric and ferromagnetic inclusions can be fully or partially magnetized by an external dc bias magnetic field. Two directions of wave propagation are considered for magnetized inclusions: 1) the direction of the bias field; 2) the direction transversal to the direction of magnetization. It has been shown that the metamaterials can exhibit the different properties depending on the material constituent and the direction of wave propagation. Antenna substrate application of the metamaterials is discussed in the review.
