Spatial economic analysis in a globalised world

Abstract

This editorial introduces the ten papers included in this issue of Spatial Economic Analysis (SEA). All the papers are, in different ways, related to the globalisation of the spatial economy, either through processes of increased integration of knowledge, trade and investment, or through aspects which are specifically relevant to emerging countries' economies. Increased attention to and from emerging economies is proving to be fruitful for the discipline. In particular, two papers address issues related to foreign direct investment (FDI), from the estimation of their determinants to their differential impacts at different stages of the FDI process in non-OECD countries, and to the role of shared corridors in Sub-Saharan Africa. This issue further presents studies investigating the spatial sub-national determinants and consequences of the concentration of innovative abilities, related diversification, levels of informality, gender-biased poverty, manmade disasters and rainfall, the syncing of regional cycles, and violence.
