Concentration in South African Manufacturing Industry: Measuring Both Blades of the Marshallian Scissors

Abstract

The release of a new set of manufacturing data by the Central Statistical Services allows for a number of concentration measures to be estimated for the first time. These estimates allow us to sketch the most complete picture to date about concentration levels and trends in South African manufacturing industry. However, this paper goes further than most previous studies insofar as it also looks at demand-side or buyer concentration. This is an important (but often ignored) element that might impact on the competitive process.
