Investigating the development of local government research within a decade: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract

Local government wields significant influence across various domains – from politics to economics. However, the academic literature lacks comprehensive investigations into the developmentalprocesses and changes, leaving gaps in understanding that scholars are eager to address. Accordingly, we analyzed 5,080 research articles sourced from the Web of Science (WOS) database, employs the bibliometric analysis method to synthesize critical insights from a decade's worth of local government research. Our investigation sheds light on the historical context and development potential, identify prominent scholars who have provided significant contributions to this field. Furthermore, we pinpoint key research trends about local government that captivate the scholarly community. Our findings not only enrich the understanding of local government, but also pave the way for future research. We conclude by offering valuable suggestions for further exploration in this dynamic area.
