Abstract

This brief paper tells the story of the first 40 years of Planning Perspectives, albeit principally from possibly the most biased source: the recollections of the surviving Editors. However, this insider view gives a unique perspective on the journal’s development. It presents an interesting trajectory of growth and change, mirroring the wider changes in academic publishing through those decades: from limited opportunities to publish in planning history to the ‘publish or perish’ pressures of a much larger academic world. The processes of editing and developing the journal are explored as it has grown from 3 issues and 296 pages in 1986–1443 pages in 2024.
