Abstract

In the course of a series of field trips the landscape associated with the great late medieval park at Vieil-Hesdin, Pas-de-Calais, France, was subject to detailed observations and analysis. This led to an evaluation of the archaeological potential of the site and the opportunities it presented for further study. Working with local historians attempts were made to locate a number of key features including the famous Marsh Pavilion, a programme of activity which included walking the entire 14 kilometres perimeter of the park. Conclusions were reached about the variety of ways in which the space within the park was used. Post-medieval factors were examined and incorporated in to an account of the transformation of the once celebrated park and modern perceptions of the park’s significance examined.
