Practical Experience, Expectations, Hiring, Promotion and Tenure: A Real Estate Perspective

Abstract

Executive Summary. This article presents an investigation of the effect of business experience on teaching, hiring and promotion decisions. Real estate academicians’ perceptions of the importance of business experience are compared to those of finance academicians and by real estate sub-type. Real estate and finance academicians have similar perceptions of the importance of business experience. Both groups view business experience positively with respect to teaching and external program perception, but give it little weight in hiring, promotion and tenure decisions. With respect to real estate academic sub-types, the primary differences concern magnitude of perception as opposed to actual differences in perception.
