Abstract

This paper examines how the Indian military operation in 1971 war capturing four villages in Baltistan, with an area of 804 sq.kms in the North-Western border of Ladakh have affected the life of the borderland people. In its capacity, this paper attempts to uncover the heart-wrenching, but unknown sufferings and narratives of divided families in the Turtuk borderland areas in Ladakh. The analysis explores the dynamics of problems and changes resulting from the region’s proximity to the border, categorizing the timeline into two broad phases: Pre-1999 (the period of immediate changes after partition) and Post-1999 (the period of transformation from alienation to assimilation). The paper also deals with various socio-economic and demographic indicators of change, emphasizing that borders are not merely a territorial entity, but also represent economic opportunities for borderlands people. This research uses ethnography to explore Ladakh’s borderland communities, contributing to understanding Asian border’s complexities and impacts.
