Abstract

Whilst the Danes have collectively been expressing and acting out the values of covenantal pluralism at important times in history, it has proved more challenging to combine the non-legal and the legal aspects of covenantal pluralism in Danish society and law. The Danish constitution, whilst establishing religious freedom for all, positions the Evangelical-Lutheran Church as a privileged pillar of Danish democracy, illustrating the difficulties Denmark faces vis-à-vis tolerance of deep differences in the religious landscape, as characterized by covenantal pluralism. In this article, these difficulties are explored with respect to three aspects of covenantal pluralism: freedom of religion of belief, national values, and religious literacy.
