Holy See–Israel Diplomatic Relations in Theological Context

Abstract

The complexities of the political activities of the Holy See come into relief in considering its relationship with another unique political actor: the state of Israel. This paper places their relations within their theological context to demonstrate both how Israel–Vatican relations are constrained by typical legal and political conventions, but are also rendered distinct by the theological considerations of dialogue between Catholics and Jewish persons generally. The role of Pope Francis in seeking a ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas War confirms this.
