Abstract

This article explores the critical role of place leadership in advancing blockchain technology, a controversial emerging industry, in the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Zug. It examines how leadership dynamics, actor constellations and contextual factors shape the growth of such contentious sectors. The study highlights distinct differences in the blockchain industry’s development between the two regions, emphasising the importance of place leadership in navigating the complexities of emerging industries. We argue that while first-mover regions can gain advantages by prioritising technological experimentation and selectively engaging with criticisms, second-mover regions can also succeed by swiftly focusing on less controversial applications. Across all contexts, robust regulatory frameworks at higher levels are crucial for addressing industry-related controversies.
