Abstract

The current healthcare sector faces complex organizational changes driven by fiscal constraints, demographic shifts, technological evolution, and rising demands for accountability. While leadership is recognized as essential to managing such transitions, prevailing models focus on procedural or behavioral competencies, marginalizing the moral and emotional dimensions crucial to sustained change. This article argues that character, defined as the integration of moral values, discernment, and integrity, can be seen a strategic intangible asset that highlights effective leadership in healthcare organization’s transformation. Drawing on literature from management and organization studies, including strategic leadership theory and behavioral analysis, alongside business-specific research, this study conducts an integrative theoretical review. Foundational works inform the development of a conceptual framework positioning character as central to strategic change, resilience, and trust-building in the governance of healthcare organizations. The findings suggest that excluding character from leadership models in high-stakes environments like hospitals weakens organizational integrity and stakeholder alignment. The article concludes that character-driven leadership is not only ethically imperative but also operationally and economically vital. Practical implications include rethinking leadership development, HR policies, and organizational design to embed character within the strategic core of governance of healthcare organization.
