A pioneering study on discrete cosine transform

Abstract

The discrete cosine transform is a widely applied linear transform not only in data compression but also in statistics. On the transform, John von Neumann's research article published in Annals of Mathematical Statistics in 1941 has not been recognized as a pioneering study. This note is intended to share the idea that his research is eligible to be regarded as such a study.
