Abstract

When tornadoes are predicted in forecasts, many individuals have a need to gather information quickly to make decisions about if/how to prepare. This study focuses on what factors predict or amplify ones need for information. Employing the social amplification of risk framework, 679 individuals in the mid-south U.S. were surveyed. Results indicated those with prior experience with tornadoes, engage with weather generally, and those who fear future tornadoes, along with those who used a breadth of media sources for information, felt the most informed about severe weather. Implications were discussed, in terms of how best to provide information to various publics.
