Abstract

By using publicly available banking statistics and firm-loan-level micro data, we uncover recent trends in the Turkish banking sector with specific focus on bank ownership. We find that the share of state ownership in the banking system is on the rise with some economic benefits. The role of state banks in investment and export loans is expanding. State banks also increasingly facilitate financial access for relatively credit-constrained firms. They assist SMEs greatly and have a loan portfolio with less concentration on large firms. Interestingly, these banks are more likely to lend to first-time borrowers and firms with a single-bank relationship.
