Quantifying the interactive effects of ecological efficiency and ecological resilience: evidence from the Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract

Efficiency and resilience are two central issues in sustainability research. It is unclear whether prioritizing resilience comes at the expense of efficiency, or whether both goals can be promoted simultaneously. This article evaluates the eco-efficiency (EE) and ecological resilience (ER) of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region by constructing indicator systems, and comprehensively measures spatial-temporal evolution, dynamic coordinated, and interactive effects relationships by using the multi-index comprehensive evaluation method, Super-SBM model, gray correlation analysis, and P-VAR model. The study found: 1) the correlation between urban EE and ER in study area is high. 2) There is an asymmetric interaction between EE and ER. 3) When subjected to shocks, ER has a significant role in promoting and sustaining the benefits of EE, and EE promotion of ER is only manifested in the short term.
