Mapping the Waves of Terrorism Using Computational Text Analysis

Abstract

Since its establishment by David Rapoport in 1989, Terrorism and Political Violence has shaped and guided the field of terrorism studies. This article leverages computational methods to analyze each article published in Terrorism and Political Violence. Through a range of modeling techniques, it traces the evolution of terrorism studies since 1989, using the journal as a benchmark for scholarly discourse in the field. It identifies thematic and methodological shifts, emerging policy concerns, and enduring questions within the academic treatment of terrorism. This project not only offers a structured overview of how terrorism studies has evolved over time, but also highlights how global events and scholarly perspectives have shaped the academic discourse over time. Furthermore, it acknowledges the contributions of David Rapoport and the journal’s community of authors and editors, who have collectively advanced our understanding of terrorism. The discussion concludes by contemplating the next epoch for the journal and field at large.
