Abstract

The 18th century rise of the Wärräséh chieftains, in particular their calculated foray into national politics and their role alongside the Solomonide chieftains is not known well. The goal of this article is to examine these chieftains’ early political transformations, with a focus on Seru of Wärräséh as a key player. By looking at a number of sources and works of literature, the study makes the case that Seru’s political scheming in the middle of the 1760s enabled the dynasty to rise from relative obscurity to become a position of considerable influence in Ethiopian national politics. Seru used military power and diplomatic skills to gain influence in the royal court; this eventually played a major role in the consolidation of power in Ethiopia during this period. The study highlights the interplay between local and national politics and offers insights into the larger historical political and military context of Ethiopian history in the late 18th century.
