Abstract

This article presents a unified approach to studying the place of locals in counterinsurgency warfare by developing a new framework around the concept of indigenization. This concept, defined as the substitution and/or the support of foreign military capacities by indigenous military forces, fully encompasses the French strategy during the first Indochina War, where indigenous peoples were employed in various forms, such as militias, guerrilla fighters, commandos, and regular soldiers within the French or Indochinese armies. Indigenization could therefore be useful for studying other counterinsurgency wars by focusing on the indigenous population.
