Abstract

Based on available written sources, this study critically examines and analyzes the antecedents of the Ethiopian Revolutionary Terror (1976–1978) and the human rights abuses in Ethiopia during the Därg regime. The paper aims to identify the institutional and political foundations for the transfer of state power from the ancien regime to the military regime including the multi-faceted forces and factors that contributed to the escalation of political violence and terror. The findings reveal that the antecedents of Ethiopia’s Revolutionary Terror were largely the result of synergies among two modern political organizations that shared similar ideologies and strategic goals but employed different tactics.
