Conclusions, counter-insurgency in the age of geopolitics

Abstract

The special issue highlights how many of the most important terms in counter-insurgency are ill-defined, hindering proper discussions and comparative analysis. The special issue also highlights how counter-insurgency campaigns tend to be defined by the culture, capacities, and organizational history of the various parties; general ‘laws’ of counter-insurgency often fail because of this. Some of these problems can get worse in the future as funding declines for counter-insurgency studies, yet new counter-insurgencies will come again, also in the age of geopolitics.
