Cross-border interactions on the Benelux-Germany border in the light of synchronization economic fluctuations

Abstract

This study assesses the degree of cross-border economic interdependence among NUTS-3 regions along the borders of the Benelux countries and Germany, understood as the convergence of economic fluctuations, and identifies their key morphological characteristics. The analysis is structured in two parts: the first outlines the methodological framework, while the second presents the empirical results. The findings indicate that, although numerous cross-border economic links exist, their intensity is generally low, which partly contrasts with the prevailing view in the literature that these border regions are characterised by strong interdependencies.
