Innovative activity among knowledge intensive entrepreneurial firms: an exploratory study of homophilic relationships

Abstract

This paper investigates in an exploratory manner the relationship between innovative activity and homophilic relationships among founders of knowledge intensive entrepreneurial firms in European countries. Initial findings suggest that firms with two founders, both of whom are male or both of whom have a college education are more innovative in the sense of either commercializing new goods and services or patenting. Initial findings also suggest that firms with two young founders (under age 30) are less innovative in these dimensions. However, controlling for country and sector of operation suggests that these initial homophilic relationships are not generalizable; rather, they are country specific and sector specific.
