Bridging the skills gap in South Africa: evaluating workforce readiness in Western Cape’s business environment

Abstract

As the fourth industrial revolution advances, the demand for technological, digital, and soft skills continues to rise, while many traditional skills become obsolete. This study examines the skills landscape in South Africa’s Western Cape province by surveying 426 businesses to identify key growth challenges. Findings reveal that shortages in digital, soft, and environmental sustainability skills, coupled with weaknesses in university and vocational training, are significant constraints. However, the study found that most employers allocate only a small portion of their budgets to staff training, underscoring the need for a more balanced approach between industry and education. The study recommends stronger collaboration among employers, universities, and vocational institutions to align curricula with market needs, along with increased employer investment in workforce development. A coordinated strategy that combines curriculum reform with employer-led training initiatives is essential to address skills mismatches, enhance workforce readiness, and support sustainable business growth in the province.
