Environmental transformation of the coal region. Decarbonization in Silesian voivodeship in Poland

Abstract

The article presents legal and formal bases for changes related to the phase-out of coal, principles of spatial planning and good practices of the Silesian transformation process. Additionally, it includes a detailed SWOT analysis of Just Transition in the environmental dimension of the Silesian voivodeship, in the context of challenges and opportunities related to decarbonization. The article proposes strategic directions of action to support the environmental transformation of mining regions from the point of view of social research. Conclusions from research on decarbonization in the Silesian voivodeship and recommendations supporting the Just Transition process were presented.
