Abstract

This article examines the challenges facing the historic district (HD) in Ardakan, Yazd, Iran, with a focus on the municipality and the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization (ACHHTO) in urban renewal efforts. Through valuable insights gathered from residents and local officials, the study aims to capture narratives surrounding the area. Despite restoration initiatives in the 1990s, ongoing issues such as dilapidated, abandoned buildings (DABs), urban decay, and inadequate parking threaten the area’s heritage. The study advocates for an integrated urban renewal framework (URF) that incorporates perspectives from both governance and residents to promote HD effectively. Insights from qualitative interviews with local stakeholders, a review of city documents, and observational data provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within HD, enhancing the understanding of urban renewal dynamics in the HD.
