Community-driven disaster management: A case from the Middle East

Abstract

This is an informative exploratory study that aims to investigate the role of public awareness and how it leads to the development of community-driven disaster management frameworks. Interviewer-administered questionnaires and personal interviews were conducted in Jordan. The sample consisted of people from the 12 governorates/districts. The findings revealed that respondents have been inadequately/inconsistently informed about disaster management guidelines. The findings also revealed that insufficient attempts have been made to transform public awareness into more practical community-driven frameworks for disaster management. Public awareness reflects positively on the outcomes of disaster management. It is expected to improve the ways people think and get involved. The value of public awareness in disaster management is still underexplored, especially in the Middle East. This research sheds the light on the significance of shifting public awareness from its theoretical boundary into more practical and social perspectives
